Title: How to Love
Author:  be_my_precious
Rating: PG
Pairing: Godric/Eric; Sookie's POV
Warnings: none?
Summary: Never before had she seen Eric like this.
Disclaimer: I don’t own any of the character from True Blood.

She watched the scene with curiosity.  In all her time dealing with the vampires, there was always a sense of power… a sense of entitlement that seemed almost commonplace.  The only one that seemed to harbor anything different was Bill, and that was, she believed, only due to the sheer fact that she was his lover.  Even then he staked his claim, making sure that all others of his kind knew she was his.  The sight before her now was another anomaly in her thinking, especially since it involved one of the most self-serving of their kind.

Eric was kneeling, head bent low at his maker’s feet.  Godric, whom had just been rescued from the Fellowship of the Sun, was sitting in a chair amongst the rest of the Texas vampires and watched with quiet observance of his child.  Never before had she seen Eric like this.  He was usually arrogant and over-confident.  Walking closer to obtain a better view, she silently took in every slight nuance of the sight.

It had happened at least twice this evening already, the first time being in the Fellowship basement.  This time was different.  When Luke came into the nest earlier, a bomb strapped to his chest, Eric had left her side in a flash to stand in front of Godric as if to protect him.  As Luke depressed the trigger, she witnessed the blonde Viking wrap his arms around the smaller yet more powerful vampire almost… lovingly?  Then Luke’s bomb didn’t go off, Eric looking as if he wanted to rip out the boy’s throat.  Only the calm, gentle hand of Godric on his arm had made him stay where he was.

Now, after dealing with the fellowship soldier, the vampires were once again in party mode, although a bit more subdued than before.  Eric hadn’t returned to finish his conversation with her.  Instead, he stayed with the Texas sheriff, and this was where they were now.

Suddenly, Godric was up out of his seat looking down at his child with unmistakable love.  His small hand reached out to caress the blonde head.  “Look at me, my child” she heard, and strained to hear the rest of the conversation above the din of voices around her.

Eric looked up with a slight hint of sorrow.  Or perhaps that’s longing? she thought.  “Yes, master?”

“You know you do not need to call me that, my child.  We have known each other too long and too often for such formality.”

“It is with respect-”

“No.  Stand up, Eric.  I will not have you kneeling for me in gesture.  I know how you feel.”

A flash of something crossed Eric’s face as he slowly stood up.  It was startling how much taller he was than Godric.  Usually his height made for quite a formidable presence, yet next to the older vampire he looked subservient… submissive even.  And when Godric once again lifted his hand to caress the blonde’s face his head bowed and leaned into the touch.  If she didn’t know Eric at all, she would have thought he was an innocent and meek member of his species.  She did know better of course, which made the whole exchange seem more strange.

She took a chance to look around… to see if anyone else was watching this play out as intently as she.  No one was paying the least bit of attention to the pair.  Turning her gaze back, she saw Godric’s hand make it’s way down to grasp Eric’s, fingers entwining as his other hand lifted the other’s chin just enough to make eye contact.  It seemed they stayed that way for the longest time, until Godric spoke again.

“Come with me, my Eric.”

“Yes, -” Eric stopped short of using the title of master.  His gaze never strayed from the other and a slight smile could be seen on his lips.  “Let us go, then.”

Godric grinned.  “Yes.”  Still holding on to the Viking’s hand, he lead him towards another end of the room, retreating finally down one of the hallways.

She stood still, a war going on inside her.  She knew whatever they were going to talk about was private, but part of her longed to keep watching.  Shaking herself, she turned around just in time for Bill to come through the door from outside.

“Are you alright, Sookie?” Bill asked, and she could tell he was tense with worry.

“Yes Bill, I’m fine.  A little shook up, but fine.”  She smiled.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.  Now stop brooding and just keep me company, ok?” She smiled again, lost in both Bill’s arms and the scene she just witnessed.  “Hey Bill?”

“Yes, Sookie?”

“He loves him, you know.”

Bill turned her around to face him, a questioning look on his face.  “Who does?”

“Eric.  Eric loves Godric.”

“Eric doesn’t know how to love.”

She just stared, smiling to herself.  There wasn’t any point in getting into a fight about this.  She knew.  Eric did, in fact, know how to love.
Enjoy :)

Awwww. I love how even though Eric is so much taller, around Godric he seems so subservient. Love him calling Godric master also. ; )

Haha, poor disbelieving Bill. He'll find out the truth soon enough I suppose.

I absolutely loved this, it was perfect. The descriptions were really great; I liked how you emphasised their size difference. And Eric being protective ... aaw. Sookie's pov was well done, it's always nice to observe a couple from the outside. Even if we all know that Eric and Godric weren't just leaving to -talk- about something private. ;) The hand-holding was adorable. Great work. I hope you'll write more. :D

This was so well written. Loved that it was from a third party view. Haven't read much of that and enjoyed it.

I feel your take on the bomb explosion is in the correct voice versus what is expected, that Eric will protect Sookie so she has to suck out silver schrapnel. Once again, I wish AB would hire writers that are vested in the characters, writers who look deep into the characters souls, past and future and would write as such and not just for a paycheck.
